HBO has announced that two fan-favorite series, Westworld and Game of Thrones, will not attend this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International. The series’ absence means that HBO will be sitting the convention out entirely, as the recently announced Game of Thrones prequel spin-off will not be present.
“Due to production schedules and air dates for Game of Thrones and Westworld, these series will not be presented at San Diego Comic-Con this summer,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline. “HBO has a longstanding relationship with SDCC, and we are very grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic response over the years. We look forward to returning in the future.”

HBO sitting out SDCC makes a certain amount of sense, as the second of season of Westworld will have wrapped by the convention’s July 19 start date. Similarly, the final season of Game of Thrones is currently in production and is not slated to air until 2019. The storyline of the series’ eighth season is also one of the most closely kept television secrets in recent memory, so it makes sense that HBO wouldn’t want to let anything slip prematurely.
Westworld‘s second season ends on June 24 with “The Passenger.” Game of Thrones‘ final season is set to air in 2019. SDCC runs from July 19-22.
