This LEGO Ideas Voltron is the Largest Buildable Brick Mech, Ever

TV

The latest LEGO Ideas release is the biggest yet — when it comes to mechanized combat units created to safeguard the universe from evil. LEGO today revealed a slew of details about their upcoming LEGO Ideas Voltron set. The press release also comes with a plethora of pictures for prospective Paladins to scrutinize.

This isn’t just a LEGO kit set to resemble the mech warrior, though. This is as close to the real deal as it gets. The set is actually comprised of five buildable and posable lions that can be combined to create Voltron, the star of the classic ‘80s cartoon Voltron: Defender of the Universe and, more recently, the Netflix series Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Each lion can be played with or displayed separately, then transformed and connected to each other to form Voltron — the black lion acts as Voltron’s head and torso, while the red and green lions act as arms and the yellow and blue lions are Voltron’s legs (the legs are not posable, though). It wouldn’t be a Voltron LEGO set without the mech’s iconic shield and sword, which are included. Of course, an instruction booklet is included in box.

According to LEGO, LEGO Ideas Voltron is the largest buildable mech the company has ever produced. Here are some additional details about exactly how large Voltron is, as well as just how many pieces you’ll be looking to assemble if you take on the challenge:

This set includes over 2,321 pieces. Voltron measures over 15” (40cm) high, 5” (14cm) long and 8” (21cm) wide. Black lion measures over 6” (17cm) high, 8” (22cm) long and 5” (15cm) wide. Yellow and blue lions each measure over 3” (8cm) high, 8” (21cm) long and 3” (8cm) wide. Green and red lions each measure over 3” (8cm) high, 7” (18cm) long and 1” (5cm) wide. Voltron’s sword measures 11” (29cm) long. Voltron’s shield measures 6” (16cm) in diameter.

The LEGO Voltron set came to be through the LEGO Ideas program, which allows LEGO enthusiasts to vote on their favorite fan-made sets. Once a set acquires enough votes, representatives from LEGO review the builds. Lucky creators can see their sets go on to become official commercial releases, granted LEGO approves them and the proper commercial licenses (such as Voltron) can be acquired.

The LEGO Ideas Voltron will release on Aug. 1. The set can be acquired in limited quantities at San Diego Comic-Con International from July 17-22. The set retails for $179.99.
