More than a year after the Netflix series was announced, The Witcher is set to begin casting, according to showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who tweeted about the upcoming process on Friday night.
The string of tweets explain that the scenes used for casting may find their way on to the Internet, but will in no way spoil the show for eager fans as they have each been written specifically for use during the casting process. They are entirely new scenes that capture that spirit of the characters and the show, but otherwise hold no relevance to the actual plot of the upcoming series.
It's Friday night in LA, and it's been a seriously great week here at #Witcher.
So.
Let's talk casting. Yes, I said the magic word! Casting is starting soon, and no, I can't tell you who our top picks are so don't ask. But. There is something very important you need to know. pic.twitter.com/9dfkhBIyo0

The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter for hire who often finds himself entangled in political intrigue and the bitter lives of the peasantry, often leading him into quandaries that cause him to remain bitter and sceptical of the morally ambiguous people that surround him. While Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels are set in a worl of magic and monsters, they often focus on the conflict between the human and monstrous aspects of everyday people.

While Hissrich has thus far provided fans of the Witcher franchise with a high level of transparency with regard to the process of creating a television series, she informs fans in the tweets that she will not be revealing the top picks. What she has revealed that they will be casting internationally. In the final tweet, she also revealed that Dandelion — bard and faithful friend of the main character, Geralt of Rivia — will be known in the show as Jaskier, which is the name given to the character in the original Polish novels. When asked by fans about the reasoning behind this, Hissrich stated that she wanted to remain faithful to the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, who will be serving as a creative consultant on the show.
Since the release of the critically-acclaimed video game adapation, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (developed by CD Projekt Red), fans have enthusiastically formed entire lists of actors they believe would suit the various roles in a show of film. Since the announcement of the Netflix series, some of those casting choices have grown in popularity. Some of those popular choices include Mads Mikkelsen as Geralt of Rivia and Eva Green as Yennefer of Vengerberg. There was also some excitement among fans of the series when Mark Hamill showed that he was open to playing Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir.
The first season of the show will be shot entirely in Eastern Europe and will be just eight episodes long. It will include elements of both Sapkowski’s novel series as well as the video games that helped to popularize them internationally.
