Netflix has picked up Freud, an Austrian crime drama that puts famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud hot on the trail of a serial killer in 19th century Vienna.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will partner with ORF, Austria’s public broadcasting company, for the eight-part German-language series, releasing the show internationally. Production is set to begin this fall. Casting has not yet been announced.

When a serial killer begins prowling the streets of 1800s’ Vienna, it’s up to a young Sigmund Freud — along with a local psychic and a surly detective — to hunt down the murderer and make the city safe again.

Marvin Kren, whose credits include the acclaimed German series 4 Blocks for TNT Series, is attached to direct the series. Writing is being handled by Kren, Stefan Brunner and Benjamin Hessler. Heinrich Ambrosch will executive produce for Austria’s Satel Film, along with Moritz Polter for Bavaria Fiction in Germany.

Freud will be Netflix’s first original drama out of Austria.

After finding success with German mystery series Dark, which Netflix recently greenlit for a second season, the streaming giant seems to have found a good thing overseas. Netflix signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, its first such overall deal in Europe.
