Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons has joined the pilot of HBO’s Watchmen, an adaptation of the seminal comic by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.
Although no details have been revealed about his role on Damon Lindelof’s series, Deadline reports he’ll play “an aging and imperious lord of a British manor.”

Lindelof has been clear the drama won’t be a direct adaptation of Watchmen, which he’s described as “sacred.” “Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted,” he wrote. “They will however be remixed.” As such, the series’ official logline reads, “Set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.”
Watchmen will mark Irons’ return to television following his Emmy Award-winning role in Showtime’s historical drama The Borgias, which aired from 2011 to 2013. An acclaimed actor whose film credits include Dead Ringers, The Lion King and Reversal of Fortune, Irons also played Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
