After stepping away to work on other projects, former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight is returning to Netflix.
The writer/director/producer has signed a multi-year deal with the streaming service to develop new original content with both new series and feature-length programming. DeKnight began his relationship with Netflix as showrunner and executive producer of Daredevil, the first of the Marvel series to debut on the platform. He left the series amicably in 2015, following the first season, to pursue other projects, including directing and co-writing Pacific Rim Uprising.

DeKnight is a multifaceted writer, director, producer and showrunner whose daring visions have gripped audiences for years,” Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original content, said in a statement. “From Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which become a global cult sensation, to his historical gladiator epic Spartacus, and his unforgettable work on season one of Marvel’s Daredevil, Steven’s bold, visceral storytelling has left its mark. We look forward to teaming with him on future original series and other projects for our members around the world.”
Before working on Daredevil, DeKnight created the popular Starz series Spartacus, and served as its showrunner and executive producer. DeKnight’s television credits as a writer, director, and producer also include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Smallville and Angel.
