Daredevil Star Doesn’t Know If There Will Be Another Season

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Marvel’s Daredevil Season 3, now streaming on Netflix.

With fans still reeling from the cancellations of Iron Fist and Luke Cage, Daredevil star Charlie Cox has called into question whether there are additional seasons planned for his Marvel Netflix drama.

Indeed, the Season 3 finale felt like a reset, or an ending, with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk returned to prison, and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) reunited, and once again on good terms, with friends Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and even planning to open a new law firm. Although the final moment teased the potential rebirth of Wilson Bethel’s Benjamin Poindexter as Bullseye, this season neatly tied up loose threads that had been dangling since 2015.

Asked by The Hollywood Reporter about Matt’s future following this more “hopeful” ending,  Cox confessed, “At this point, I don’t know if there’s any intention of us doing more seasons.”

“But were that to be the case,” he continued, “I think there’s an interesting challenge for the writers, because I don’t think we can do another season where Matt is so isolated, so alone, and so broken and angry. I think in order to avoid being a broken record, we’re going to have to find a Matt Murdock that at least initially has a slightly different attitude toward the people that he loves, and toward himself, and toward God.”

New showrunner Erik Oleson was similarly uncertain about the prospects of a fourth season, but undoubtedly more optimistic. ““I can tell you that I’m very hopeful to go do a Season 4. There has not yet been any kind of an official pick-up,” he said in an interview published earlier this week, “but if there is, I’m very hopeful that I will be a part of it.”

Those comments of course arrive in the shadow of the cancellations of Iron Fist and Luke Cage, made in two successive weeks. Although the former may have not come as much surprise, considering the mixed (at best) reviews for Iron Fist‘s two seasons, the blow from the latter was deeply felt. A new report, released on Tuesday, indicates social-media buzz for the Marvel Netflix dramas has decreased dramatically over time, which may not only explain the cancellations but also cast doubts about the survival of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Punisher.

Now available on Netflix, Marvel’s Daredevil Season 3 stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Joanne Whalley as Sister Maggie, Wilson Bethel as Benjamin Poindexter, Jay Ali as Rahul “Ray” Nadeem and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk.
